About
Ewan Calder
Director & cinematographer, Glasgow.
I grew up in Glasgow, where the weather changes four times before lunch. I’ve been learning to light for it ever since.
I started out logging rushes at a post house on the Clyde, then shot music videos for friends’ bands on whatever camera we could borrow. Twelve years on, I direct brand films, campaigns and music videos across the UK and Europe.
The films are made outdoors, with small crews and natural light, and they tend to have weather in them — wind, haar, low sun, dust. I like real locations, long lenses close to people, and edits that breathe rather than hurry.
I’m based in Glasgow and travel for the right project. I’m always happy to talk a brief through before it’s a brief.
What I do on a film
Three jobs. The credit always says which one.
Direction
Brand films, campaigns and music videos, from treatment to final grade. I write my own treatments, cast with the producer and stay through the mix.
Cinematography
For other directors, three or four times a year, when the light is the point. ARRI and anamorphic packages through Harbour & Gale.
Editing
Everything I direct, and the occasional film for someone else. Avid or Resolve, in Glasgow or remote.

Dates, place and what it’s for. A budget range helps if you have one — it changes what’s possible, not whether I’m interested.
